Have you ever met anyone who has had piano lessons for years but can’t play you anything? I have. The problem seems to be that they have forgotten their old pieces and haven’t yet learnt their new pieces. How sad! Thats why I encourage students to keep playing the pieces they have been studying, these are their repertoire, the primary aim is not to collect distinction certificates, its to be able to play the piano, to build on repertoire to increase your ability to communicate on a musical level. Pieces learnt can be used to enter competitions, play in concerts or music festivals or to play to relatives and friends.

We have recently enjoyed the epta piano competition. It was a really encouraging and a joy to listen to some of the playing. I would like to enter more of my students next year, the entry date is in February. If you haven’t got your pieces safely under your belt by February forget it. Those who have guarded and cherished their repertoire over the year and have what it takes to handle the pressure are the pupils I recommend to enter.
